Artist Selected-Neil Shigley

"My dream for each portrait is to, in some small way, touch on the human condition. Each portrait starts with a walk around various areas of San Diego, where I talk to people living on the street. I approach them with a great deal of respect. Even though they don’t have a home, they still have a space that is theirs. As an artist I am looking for interesting characters."

I really enjoy Neil Shigley's work. The prints displayed in the reading are beautiful and the line quality is amazing. I like his work because he really has a sense for the human form and facial features. The detailing and line work seems to be very precise and the emotion he depicts on the faces really give the person their portraying a sense of character which in return makes them seem to be more alive. It gives the work that life like quality and makes it more relate-able for the viewer. When viewing his work you notice that the prints are large which allows the viewer to get lost in the details. I also selected this quote from the text because I enjoy the fact that he tries to best represent the person he's portraying. Not only does he take their picture but he gets to know them making it easier to depict them and really show character. I think his technique is very interesting so I will try to incorporate his line quality and really gathering a sense of the subject matter (myself) and really telling something about myself through the piece.
